Red Ribbon Activities Were Successful

The Coalition was involved with some activities in honor of Red Ribbon Week. This takes place the last week of
October each year. The Red Ribbon Campaign is done each year in honor of fallen DEA Agent Enrique Camarena. During
the campaign, local communities are asked to provide some activities that will teach about the dangers of drug/alcohol abuse.
The Coalition provided some volunteers to the CARE Network who have an annual Red Ribbon Event. The event included
face painting, pumpkin painting and giving children a red ribbon balloon. There were approximately 200 participants
at this year's event.
In addition, the Coalition sponsored an essay writing contest in the local school districts. The contest was for
grades 6 through 8. The topic for the essay contest was "My Space Is No Place for Drugs." The winner of the contest
was Dustin Davis a 6th Grader at Wintersville Elementary School. He received a gift certificate from Wal-Mart (See photo
above).
Anti-Drug Dance at Buckeye North Middle well received by Students
Another successful Anti-Drug Dance was held at the Buckeye North Middle School on January 6, 2006. There
were 100 students in attendance for the affair.
The students danced the night away to the sounds of DJ Rich Coburn. The students were treated to pizza and
refreshments that evening. During the evening, the students were involved in contests for prizes. A message
was given to the students about the importance of being able to enjoy activities like these without the use of dangerous drugs
and alcohol.
A prize was given out the end of the evening for the best original anti-drug slogan. The winning slogan
was "I'd rather eat bugs than take drugs."
Principal Joyce Palmer was pleased with the response of the students and thanked the Coalition for being involved
with their school.
Safe and Sober Town Hall Meeting Well Received
On March 28, 2006, the Jefferson County Anti-Drug Abuse Coalition was one of 1,200 venues nationwide
that held the Safe and Sober Town Hall Meeting. The theme of the meeting was "Let's Start Talking Before They Start
Drinking." The focus is on the subject of underage drinking. The event was held at Jefferson Community College.
The evening's events included a slide presentation, film, panel discussion and a question and answer period. The evening's
moderator was Doug Wentz from Prevention Partners Plus in Mahoning County Ohio. There were nearly 100 in attendance.
The attendees included students from 4 school districts, law enforcement, school officials, field professionals and concerned
citizens of the community.
The next phase of this event includes a "Reach Out Now Teach In." This will be information that
will be presented to 5th and 6th grade students. This is scheduled to be held in the districts and will be presented
by the districts' social educators.

Coalition Receives Funding to Have a Smart and Sober Town Hall Meeting
The Jefferson County Anti-Drug Abuse Coalition received a $1,000 grant through the Office of the First Lady Hope
Taft. This funding will be used by the Coalition to put on a Smart and Sober Town Hall Meeting.
The Town Hall Meeting will be held on March 28, 2006 at Jefferson Community College.
The theme of the Town Hall Meeting is "Let's Start Talking Before They Start Drinking." The evening's moderator will
be Mr. Doug Wentz from Prevention Partners Plus. Mr. Wentz is well known in the State for his work in prevention.
The event will include a panel of experts that will present and actively listen to the community about its
views on the subject of Underage Drinking.
This event is part of a statewide effort of Town Hall Meetings with the same theme. For more on this event

Coalition Receives Funding From Trinity ECHO Fund
In September of 2005, the Coalition received a check for $1,000.00 from the Trinity Health Systems ECHO Fund.
The check was presented to Chairperson Daniel Pinciaro from Don Ogden the Addiction Recovery Unit Program Coordinator from
Trinity Medical Center.
Coalition Receives Funding From ODADAS
In November of 2005, the Coalition received a Notice of Award for $5,000.00 from the Ohio Department of Alcohol and Drug
Addiction Services (ODADAS). This funding was awarded to support the activities of the Coalition. The funding
will be monitored through the Jefferson County Prevention and Recovery Board.
